“European mini-gardeners” at Terra Medica – learning about organic gardening

In Staffort near our headquarters in Karlsruhe, the Schwabe Group has created a little piece of paradise at Terra Medica. We grow medicinal plants here in keeping with the principles of organic farming. And when it comes to biodiversity, Terra Medica has really become a point of pride for the Group! But it also has all sorts of things to offer gardening fans.

Fifteen boys and girls from a nearby school recently spent an afternoon at Terra Medica as “European mini gardeners” and gained insights into the work done there. This was hands-on gardening: after all, if you want to be good at something, it’s best to start early.

Finished! The calendula seeds have been packed.

Giving children a wide range of experiences

Schwabe supports a number of educational projects and social activities on a global and regional level. With this collaborative project, Schwabe gave the European mini-gardeners between the ages of 8 and 12 an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at pesticide-free gardening that benefits biodiversity. In particular, these gardening apprentices were able to develop some green skills in pruning the leaves of camphor basil, harvesting lavender blossoms and sorting calendula seeds.

Ultimately the children enjoyed experiencing the mimosa best of all: as flowers go, it is a real character, and you don’t see them every day.

The mini-gardener project

The European mini-gardener project was established in 2013 by Bettina Gräfin Bernadotte; the objective was to teach children a greater awareness about the plant world and increase appreciation for gardening work. The Terra Medica team is a partner in the European mini-gardeners program and facilitates opportunities for children to receive valuable lessons in gardening.
