In July, our team “Schwabe – From Nature. For Health.” took part in the three-week City Cycling event hosted by the Karlsruhe municipal government, and in that time we covered almost 27,000 kilometers – almost 17,000 miles! Our team alone saved nearly 4,439 tons of CO2 emissions!

The backstory behind City Cycling

The City Cycling campaign, called “Stadtradeln” in German, is a three-week period in which a town, a team and/or an individual cyclist tries to cover as much territory as possible on two wheels – whether it’s the commute to work, running errands, pursuing hobbies or on vacation. This is good for your health, good for team spirit and good for the environment: after all, riding your bike is CO2-free and an environmentally friendly form of mobility.

Lots of Schwabianers – lots of kilometers

In Karlsruhe at company headquarters, 102 cyclists took part in the team “Schwabe – From Nature. For Health.” We were delighted that so many of us use a bicycle to get around. As a team, we advanced from 10th place to 7th place in Karlsruhe’s city-wide ranking, and we defended our position as the top-scoring company to take part.

254 kilometers per person

With an average of 254 km per participants, we had a team of both seriously athletic cyclists as well as people who use their bikes for everyday and leisure purposes. Every kilometer counts. This colorful blend of people is what makes up proper team spirit, and everyone was highly motivated to move our team to the top – even though the weather was not always on our side. Many thanks to our fantastic colleagues!

Long-term effects for more environmentally-friendly mobility

We hope that the City Cycling campaign has a lasting effect and that cycling continues to gain ground as an eco-friendly alternative to driving. The real focus of City Cycling is not just healthy exercise and team spirit: the heat map it uses also helps focus attention on the most important bike routes in a city, and it helps generate positive and low-pressure publicity for environmentally friendly mobility.
